New technology of airport repellent: scare away birds with big eyes on LED screen

Though it sounds like a piece of paper, scientists have found a new technology suitable for airport repellent birds -- using LED screen to show a pair of black circles. As we all know, if a plane collides with a bird during its take-off and landing, it will probably lead to disastrous consequences. In order to reduce risks, researchers have tried many methods, but the results are not very significant. In order to better understand the responses of birds to different types of visual stimuli, scientists from the French National Science Research Center and the University of Rennes conducted 300 tests of the captured raptors.

It is reported that two concentric black circles on white background can create a "imminent" effect, which makes birds mistakenly believe that a collision is coming.

Researchers conducted tests at the Lourdes-Tarbes-Pyr n n es in France, which is adjacent to the summer hunting grounds and the birds of prey such as vultures.

They arranged two LED screens in important areas at the two ends of the runway, and then displayed the patterns all day, deliberately letting birds see and take the initiative to circumvent them.

Unexpectedly, the birds of prey gathered in the invisible area of the screen. Even after five weeks of continuous placement, the effect is still very good. In addition, the system can also prevent the crows from approaching, such as crows, magpies and so on.

Now, the technology can be used not only in airports, but also in wind farms, so as to prevent birds from colliding with turbine blades.

Details of the study have been published in the recently published PLOS ONE journal. The original title is: "Wide-eyed glare scares raptors: From laboratory evidence to applied management" ("frighten the birds of prey with dazzling dazzle": from laboratory theory to practical application).
