In 2014, the production capacity of LED sapphire crystal ingot equipment increased by 53%.

The latest "Global Sapphire Substrate Market Report 2014" released by LEDinside, the green energy research arm of the global market research organization TrendForce, points out that due to market demand for LED and optical applications, sapphire manufacturers have active plans to expand production from ingots, substrates to patterned substrates. It is estimated that the production capacity of sapphire ingot equipment will reach 222 million millimeters per year in 2014, with an annual growth rate of 53%.
In 2013, the production capacity of sapphire crystal ingot equipment was only 145 million millimeters per year. Due to the booming demand in the LED market in the first half of 2014, the supply of crystal ingots was tight and prices rose slightly. Coupled with the rising demand for sapphire materials in optical applications, some manufacturers have restarted production expansion plans. It is estimated that the production capacity of sapphire crystal ingot equipment will reach 222 million millimeters per year in 2014, with an annual growth rate of 53%.
In the sapphire substrate sector, manufacturers are optimistic about market demand and are actively expanding cutting and polishing capacity. Among them, Taiwanese manufacturers such as Zhaoyuan, Xinjingzuan, Jingmei, etc., taking into account market demand and tax rates, the expansion areas are mainly in China. In 2013, the overall global output value of sapphire substrates for LED applications was US$549 million, and the market output value of sapphire substrates for LED applications will grow to US$934 million in 2016.
Patterned substrate manufacturers have benefited from the large-scale introduction of patterned sapphire substrates by LED chip manufacturers in Taiwan and Mainland China to improve luminous efficiency. For example, manufacturers such as Ruijie, Zhaoyuan, Zhejiang Crystal, and Dongguan Zhonggao have switched from 2-inch to 4-inch wafer production, and all have good performance. The output value of the patterned substrate market has increased by 8% annually from US$656 million in 2013. From a long-term perspective, due to the increase in the rate of LED manufacturers importing patterned substrates and the increase in the production of large-size wafers, the agency estimates that the output value of the patterned substrate market will increase to US$1,098 million in 2016.
