Korean media: Apple iPhone 17e continues to use BOE OLED panel

On July 8, according to Korean media the elec, Apple plans to release iPhone 17e next spring, which will use the OLED panel of iPhone 16e. It is reported that Apple has set a goal to maintain annual iPhone shipments at 220 million to 230 million units.

Reports show that BOE and Samsung Display are involved in the research and development of OLED screens for iPhone 17e, and LG Display is also expected to join. The OLED screens for the iPhone 16e released this year are supplied by these three companies, with BOE accounting for the highest share of shipments.

Apple released the entry-level iPhone SE series equipped with liquid crystal displays (LCD) in 2016, 2020 and 2022 respectively, and this year it released a new product under the name "iPhone 16e". This is also the first model in the series to use an OLED screen.

The iPhone 17e, which Apple plans to release next spring, will continue to use the 6.1-inch OLED display used in the iPhone 16e; while the screen of the iPhone 16e will continue to use the 6.1-inch OLED display of the 2022 iPhone 14. The iPhone SE and iPhone e series compete with similar products by reusing components from previous generation products and equipped with the latest AP.

According to reports, following the launch of iPhone 16e this year, Apple will launch iPhone 17e next year in order to maintain overall iPhone shipments. During the period of working from home, Apple increased annual iPhone shipments to 230 million units in 2020. During the same period, Samsung Electronics' Galaxy smartphone shipments dropped to 230 million units, and the two companies' annual smartphone shipments are similar.

Apple’s iPhone SE series shipped approximately 20 million units in its first year. Shipments of the iPhone 16e series are expected to be similar this year. Even if the iPhone 16e series sells well, Apple may adjust its annual shipments to no more than 20 million units. This is because if iPhone 16e sales increase, it may have a negative impact on the sales of the four iPhone 16 series models released last year.

Industry observers predict that Apple will continue to release iPhone E series models every year after next year, given the same considerations for the launch of iPhone 17e. (Compiled by TrendForce Display)
