Looking at video standards from the theme of World Standards Day

October 14, 2019, is the 50th World Standards Day. This year's theme is "Video standards create a global stage." As an industry related to video playback, the theme of this year's World Standards Day has attracted great attention within the LED industry. Many LED practitioners have forwarded and discussed it through Moments and social software. As the world's economy and culture become more connected through the Internet, video playback has become an indispensable part of life and work. It can be clearly seen that from the early video player Windows Media Player to the present, as the video resolution has increased from no more than 640*480 to the later 720P and 1080P high-definition display, and now the 4K and 8K ultra-high-definition displays that are about to become a reality, the entire process of video playback technology progress is a process of continuous compatibility and continuous improvement of resolution. With the virtual space caused by the development of the network, With the flattening of space, the boundaries of various video application scopes have begun to blur. Compared with the application scope of video, users are more concerned about the resolution and quality of the video itself. However, for the LED display industry, which has always been positioned as a video playback hardware facility, the formulation and changes of video standards are directly related to the company's market behavior and product development. Therefore, it is not surprising that LED display practitioners are discussing the theme of this year's World Standards Day.

The so-called video standards actually refer to coding standards based on the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and ITU-T (Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunication Union) respectively and jointly. There are many types of video playback formats currently on the market, such as MP4, MPEG, AVI, ASF, MOV, WMV, 3GP, RM, RMVB, FLV, F4V and other formats. Among them, there are four main organizations that formulate video standards: International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA), Consumer Electronics Association (Consumer Electron) ics Association (CEA), Society of Motion Picture and Television (SMPTE).

With the advent of the ultra-high-definition digital video era, some industries have also begun to formulate internal digital specifications within the industry. The most typical one is the seven major American film studios Disney, Fox, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Studios and Warner Bros. in March 2002. Studios) [Note: MGM withdrew from DCI in May 2005].

It is said that "third-rate companies make products, second-rate companies make brands, and first-rate companies make standards." Take Huawei as an example. In the 5G competition, Huawei not only provides technology and equipment, but also participates in the formulation of standards, establishing Huawei's unshakable position in the 5G era. It can be seen that no matter what industry, only by mastering the standards can we have a broader prospect and irreplaceability in the future. As one of the terminal display technologies for video playback, LED-related companies No matter which direction the industry wants to expand the market, the first thing it must abide by is these standards. Although through the efforts of countless related industry personnel, my country's LED industry and video industry have been at the forefront of the world, but what we still need to see is that whether it is video encoding standards or technical specifications launched by the Digital Film Advocacy Alliance, China is rarely involved in them, and this is obviously not consistent with China's growing scale of video applications. Therefore, in the ultra-high-definition display era, having domestic independent video standards will be an important factor that determines whether the entire video display industry can develop healthily and rapidly.

The good news is that my country has taken solid steps in terms of ultra-high-definition video standards. On March 12 this year, the China Ultra-HD Video Industry Alliance standard formulation working group completed in-depth research and analysis, drafting, testing and verification, and based on extensive solicitation of opinions, completed the formulation of four alliance standards, namely CUVA 001-2019 "Ultra-HD TV Measurement Methods", CUVA002-2019 "Ultra-HD TV Technical Specifications", CUVA003-2019 "General Specifications for Home Wireless LANs Carrying Ultra-HD Videos", CUVA004-2019 "Ultra-HD 4K Video Service User Experience Evaluation Algorithms and Parameters". The release of the four standards actively implements the relevant requirements of the "Ultra-HD Video Industry Development Action Plan (2019-2022)" and plays a strong role in promoting the healthy and rapid development of the UHD video industry and promoting the coordinated development of the entire UHD video industry chain.

Therefore, with the passage of time and the further expansion of the market scale, it is foreseeable that my country's current situation of "there is a market, an industry, a scale, but no standards" in terms of video display standards will gradually improve. It is foreseeable that as LED display companies deepen cooperation with domestic related industry alliances and cooperate with domestic related industry alliances to leverage their own industrial scale to do a good job in docking and compatibility with foreign standards, in the field of video standards in the future, it will most likely be only a matter of time before "Chinese standards" become "world standards".
