MediaTek and Yuantai team up to develop color e-book readers market

On May 26, MediaTek and Yuantai Technology announced that they will deepen their cooperation and integrate MediaTek's world's first system-on-chip (SoC) and built-in hardware timing control chip (Hardware TCON) specifically designed for generative AI (GAI) e-readers, and simultaneously support the latest color e-paper technology platforms E Ink Gallery and E Ink Kaleido. They will jointly develop the e-book reader and education market with color content as the core, further enhancing smart reading and digital learning experiences.

MediaTek’s latest generative AI e-reader SoC solutions SoCMT8115 and MT8126 (supporting Linux and Android platforms respectively) have built-in MediaTek NPU processors and have 7.4 TOPS AI computing performance. They can support device-side AI applications such as multi-person speech recognition, meeting verbatim transcript generation, meeting summaries, and real-time translation in more than 20 languages.

In terms of display technology, the product supports oxide thin film transistor (Oxide TFT) 7-level high-voltage drive technology. By accelerating the movement of e-paper ink particles, it greatly improves the screen update speed and display cleanliness, providing a smoother and more detailed reading experience. It can also support up to 13.3-inch, 300 PPI high-resolution e-paper panels. When paired with E Ink Gallery technology, it can support up to 7-bit color depth and expand the color gamut through dithering technology, making color content presentation more accurate and delicate. It is especially suitable for illustrated books, teaching materials, and image-rich educational application scenarios.

In addition, the two SoCs on the E Ink Kaleido platform can support local fast refresh and dynamic low image persistence algorithms, which can effectively improve the smoothness of screen switching and further expand the application potential of e-paper in interactive learning and multimedia content.

Through in-depth cooperation between the two parties, the technical potential of Gallery and Kaleido color e-paper will be further unleashed in terms of high-speed refresh, low image retention and full-color detail display, achieving a multi-tasking e-paper experience with simultaneous upgrades in image quality and operational smoothness. MediaTek will also continue to work with Yuantai to promote the development of smart reading and paperless applications with advanced SoC solutions.

MediaTek’s two latest e-paper platforms are expected to be the first to be installed on the new generation e-paper tablets of Linfiny, a subsidiary of Yuantai. Combined with the latest E Ink Gallery color e-paper platform, the optimized results of the integration of e-paper display technology and SoC will be presented in a complete machine demonstration design.
