Shanghai’s road lighting fixtures are undergoing energy-saving renovations. Xinmin Evening News reporter learned that Shanghai will basically achieve full coverage of LED lamps for road lighting in the city by 2023. After the transformation is completed, the city can save about 350 million kilowatt-hours of electricity every year. Calculated based on 3,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity equivalent to 1 ton of standard coal, it is equivalent to saving 117,000 tons of standard coal every year and reducing 350,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
According to statistics, the total number of road lighting facilities in Shanghai is approximately 825,400, and the annual electricity consumption is approximately 780 million kWh. About 701,400 of the light sources are high-pressure sodium lamps, accounting for 85% of the total. "Compared with new LED light sources, high-pressure sodium lamps have shortcomings such as high energy consumption, short service life, low color rendering index, and dim light efficiency." Yinwei, Lighting Section of the Municipal Integrated Management Center, told reporters that most of the existing high-pressure sodium lamps have exceeded their service life. In recent years, all new road lighting facilities in Shanghai have adopted LED lamps.
According to the "Shanghai Three-Year Action Plan to Promote Energy-saving Renovation of Road Lighting Facilities (2021-2023)", Shanghai plans to replace approximately 701,400 LED lamps in three years, of which 18,000 will be replaced by combining overhead lines into the ground and pole box renovations, basically achieving full coverage of LED lamps for road lighting in the city. At the same time, we will improve the road lighting facility management information platform, improve the road lighting intelligent remote control system, and establish a road lighting energy consumption assessment mechanism.
Yin Wei said that in June this year, the Municipal Comprehensive Management Center carried out pilot projects for the renovation of LED lamps on 75 sets of lamps in the section of the Yixian Road Elevated Highway near the military industry and 63 sets of lamps in the section of the Tongji Road Elevated Highway near the Haijiang River.
In 2022, Shanghai will complete the replacement of approximately 250,000 LED lamps and complete the renovation of lighting facilities on elevated expressways, cross-river bridges and tunnels, underpasses, and municipal highways. The completion of district lighting facility renovations will not be less than 25% of the facilities within the jurisdiction.
The reporter learned that after three years of renovation, Shanghai's road lighting not only has significant energy-saving and emission reduction effects, but also reduces maintenance and repair costs and improves the quality of road lighting. "The service life of new LED lamps is 4-6 times that of high-pressure sodium lamps, which can effectively reduce the failure rate of road lighting, reduce the repair rate and complaint rate of road lighting. At the same time, the color rendering index of new LED lamps is 3-4 times that of high-pressure sodium lamps, which can effectively improve visual clarity, improve road traffic safety, and reduce the occurrence of traffic accidents." Yin Wei said.
