The automotive Mini LED market is vast and many listed companies are vying to deploy it.

Under the "cyclical winter" of the panel industry, Mini LED is expected to take the lead in getting out of the "independent market" with the help of the automotive market.

Recently, a reporter from Shanghai Securities News learned in an interview that Mini LED has strong growth momentum in the field of automotive display due to its advantages in display effects and cost control. Several leading panel manufacturing companies predict that as the demand for smart cockpits in new energy vehicles increases, the penetration rate of in-vehicle Mini LEDs will continue to increase.

Mini LED accelerates "onboarding"

Intelligence is a key word for the development of the new energy automobile industry, and new display technology undoubtedly plays an important role in it. In recent years, vehicle displays have gradually developed in the direction of large-screen, multi-screen, high-definition, and interactive. Traditional display technology has been unable to meet the requirements of car companies for smart cockpits. New display technologies represented by Mini LED have begun to emerge.

Comparing various technical routes, Mini LED makes up for the shortcomings of OLED that are prone to screen burn-in, and has many advantages of both LED and OLED, including ultra-high brightness, ultra-high contrast, ultra-high color gamut, ultra-long life, etc. However, the cost of Micro LED with better effect is too high, so Mini LED is very popular.

Wang Bo, research manager of IDC China, believes that the application of Mini LED can greatly improve the brightness and contrast of in-car displays. When there is sufficient ambient light outside the cabin, it can still provide easy-to-recognize information to car users, thus improving driving safety. Compared with traditional backlight displays, the application of Mini LED can reduce power consumption to 90% of the original, thereby improving the power consumption efficiency of the vehicle.

At the previous Shanghai Auto Show, many car companies displayed new cars equipped with Mini LED screens. For example, the new-generation Navigator launched by Lincoln has dual 23.6-inch surround 4K ultra-high-definition screens and the application of Mini LED Local Dimming backlight technology. In addition, Mini LED backlight technology has also been applied in models launched by ideal, NIO, Great Wall, SAIC and other car companies.

The industry predicts that the scale of automotive Mini LED will begin to increase in 2023, and the market size will reach 4.5 million pieces in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of as high as 159%. Wang Bo said that the automotive market has huge demand for cutting-edge display technology, and Mini LED will usher in broad development space.

Listed companies compete for layout

Many executives from leading panel manufacturing companies believe that the growth trend of Mini LED in the automotive market is very obvious. It is expected that with the increase in sales of new energy vehicles and the development of large-screen automotive screens, the penetration rate of automotive Mini LED will continue to rise.

Shenzhen Tianma A recently stated in an institutional survey that the field of vehicle display shows a pattern of coexistence of multiple technologies. Mini LED backlight is one of the upgrade solutions for automotive displays. It can be matched with the existing mainstream LCD technology and greatly improve the performance of LCD display products. The company's Mini LED technology solution has been shipped to major overseas automotive customers. At the same time, the company actively launches more Mini LED solutions based on customers' project rhythm and needs.

In addition to panel manufacturing companies, many companies in the upstream of the Mini LED industry chain are also working in the automotive field.

At a recent performance briefing, Longli Technology stated that the company will begin supplying vehicle-mounted Mini LED backlight display module products to Bosch in Germany in batches in 2025. It is worth mentioning that Longli Technology disclosed in October 2022 that the company will provide German Bosch with vehicle-mounted Mini LED backlight display module products required from 2025 to 2033. The contract value is approximately US$421 million, or approximately RMB 3.027 billion.

In addition, Hanbo High-tech's automotive Mini LED backlight products have cooperated with many Tier1 suppliers and OEMs; Jufei Optoelectronics' Mini LED backlight sources have obtained projects for multiple independent brand cars; Nationstar Optoelectronics is cooperating with many domestic and foreign leading brand manufacturers to develop Mini LED products, involving backlight terminal fields such as TVs, monitors, and vehicles.
