Three major Micro LED camps have been formed, with Taiwanese manufacturers such as Fucai/Nichuang/AUO having obvious advantages.

Three major Micro LED camps have taken shape in the world. According to industry research, the "Taiwan team" composed of Taiwanese manufacturers such as Ficai, AU Optronics, and Nitronics has a leading advantage and is expected to seize the opportunity in the next-generation high-end display technology market.

TrendForce, a market research agency, pointed out that the current three major Micro LED camps in the world include "Fucai (Jingdian, Jingcheng, Lextar), AUO and Innolux", which are dominated by Taiwanese manufacturers. The other two camps are dominated by mainland manufacturers, including "BOE, Huacan Optoelectronics, BOE Pixey and BOE Crystal Core Technology", and "CSOT, Sanan Optoelectronics and Xinying Display".

It is worth noting that Hisense Vision, a Lu-based company, has recently increased its shareholding in Qianzhao Optoelectronics and will become a new force in the field of Micro LED technology. Judging from the current three major Micro LED camps, mainland companies are coordinating two of them, highlighting the mainland’s strong ambition to develop next-generation display technology. However, the industry generally believes that Taiwanese manufacturers still have obvious advantages.

Nichuang pointed out that according to the company’s understanding, Huacan Optoelectronics, which BOE recently increased its capital and shareholding, is still unable to produce Micro LED chips, and no downstream manufacturers have received samples from Huacan Optoelectronics. Fucai also said that he has not yet seen BOE’s trial production of Micro LED display samples on the market.

Nitron believes that the future development process of Micro LED by mainland factories is still uncertain. In terms of related products currently launched, sample delivery areas, small-volume production status and yield rate, mainland factories are still significantly behind the "Taiwan Team" composed of Taiwanese manufacturers such as AU Optronics, Innolux and Nitron.

The Micro LED "Taiwan region team" has a strict division of labor. High-end chips are handled by Epistar, a subsidiary of Fucai, and large-volume transfers are dominated by Nitronics. Backplanes and driver ICs are dominated by panel manufacturers such as AUO and Innolux.

Considering that Micro LED production must be closely connected upstream and downstream to improve efficiency and yield, Fucai has recently cooperated with Nitron Display, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nitron, through its subsidiary Epistar, and Nitron Display will assist it in building a 6-inch Micro LED production line. It will use Nitron's past experience in Micro LED chips and mass transfer to shorten the learning curve and accelerate mass production capabilities. (Source: Taiwan Economic Daily)
