Demand for LED lighting backlight is heating up and “blooming”

2014 is a booming year for the LED industry. The main reason is that the LED backlight market demand is flat, but the lighting market demand continues to heat up. Coupled with the industry's cautious attitude towards new MOCVD equipment, LED supply demand has gradually reached a stable level since 2014.
LEDinside stated that the penetration rate of LED TV reached 95% in 2013, driven by Chinese TV manufacturers. It is expected to completely replace CCFL in 2014, with annual TV shipments estimated to reach 209 million units, with an annual growth rate of 3%. However, the TV LED backlight output value in 2014 is estimated to be US$2.41 billion, and the annual growth rate has declined by 17%. The main reason is that the number of LEDs used in direct-lit TVs is about 50% less than that of edge-lit models. In 2014, the penetration rate of direct-lit TVs will be as high as 60%. This is the main reason why the overall LED TV shipments have grown, but the LED output value has declined.
In 2011, the concept of direct-lit backlight module was to replace the traditional CCFL backlight module. The main principle at that time was to sacrifice thickness to obtain better cost advantages. However, as technology advances more and more, when the thickness only needs to be sacrificed or the thickness of the direct-lit backlight is as thin as the edge-lit backlight, the direct-lit backlight module has advantages in cost and other aspects (for example, it is easy to make narrow bezels, suitable for local dimming (local dynamic control technology) and gradually eroded into edge-lit high-end models), that is, it can reduce costs without sacrificing thickness, resulting in the rapid increase in the penetration rate of direct-lit LED backlight designs.
However, the specifications of the lighting market are slightly confusing, and the entry threshold is low. Therefore, the demand for the entire lighting market has become small and diverse, which may be disadvantageous for large-scale enterprises. Therefore, major manufacturers adopt a business model of single specifications and fixed gross profit margin in lighting. But we have to admit that 2014 was the year that LED lighting took off.
