French industry magazine "New Factory" reported on the 26th of this month that French startup Aledia focuses on Micro LED technology and its pilot production line in Champagnier is about to be launched. The company will complete the construction of a 5,000-square-meter factory area at the end of 2023 and originally planned to put it into use in the second quarter of 2024.
To ensure industrial autonomy, Aledia chose to internalize the manufacturing process. Although the cost is higher, it is crucial to accelerating technology development. With 120 million euros in funding, the company will purchase key equipment and set its long-term goal of producing 300mm LED wafers after 2030 to establish a competitive advantage.
Aledia is focusing on two key technologies to ensure long-term development: Micro LED for next-generation displays, and DLED, which is expected to start generating revenue in 2026. The company plans to promote the commercialization of Micro LED technology starting in 2027. Although the related display market is growing rapidly, it is still mainly used in high-end products such as smart glasses and augmented reality devices due to high costs. Companies such as Xiaomi, TCL and Meta are actively investing in research and development.
Aledia currently has 215 employees, 60 of whom are PhD-level talents. The key challenge now is to prove that its technology has the potential for industrialization and maintains high performance to gain the trust of investors and gain a foothold in global competition.
