Google contact lenses are embedded in LED to monitor blood sugar listing in two years

It is understood that Google's contact lenses, cooperating with the pharmaceutical giant Novartis, have reached medical requirements and are expected to be listed in two years and have been sent to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval. More importantly, Google said the real-time blood sugar contact lens is not expensive, the same price as ordinary contact lenses, after the life of users to buy new "blood sugar glasses".

As for the charging of contact lenses, Google calls the current produced by a substance in the glasses and the reaction of blood sugar in tears, enough to ensure the daily use of contact lenses. And when the contact lenses and devices are wirelessly connected to the data, the glasses can be recharged by wireless. At present, the wireless transmission distance of glasses is 8 centimeters, and Google says this low power transmission is harmless to the human body, and the transmission speed of 20 bits per second is sufficient.

Like Google Glass, Google contact lenses are also born in the Google X laboratory, but this time Google's focus is more specific, diabetes. According to the statistics of the WHO (WTO) in 2014, 347 million people worldwide are now suffering from diabetes and there are global trends. In 2012, the number of deaths directly caused by diabetes was 1 million 500 thousand. The WHO is expected to increase the total number of deaths caused by diabetes by more than 50% by 2024.

No matter which type of diabetes, they need to test their blood glucose levels regularly, and the most commonly used method is to drop finger blood on a special test paper. "So it's painful and troublesome to measure blood sugar, so many people with diabetes don't check it on time." Google said it was announcing the plan to start "blood sugar glasses".

In January 2014, the Google Google X laboratory officially announced plans for contact lenses on the official blog, saying that circuits and chips in contact lenses can measure blood sugar levels by the amount of blood sugar in tears. And at that time Google also planned to embed LED in the glasses. If the patient's blood sugar is too high or too low, LED will be brightened to remind.

In July of the same year, Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis announced that Alcon, a manufacturer of Ophthalmology and equipment, CO operated with Google, and said the cooperation gave Alcon a chance to commercialize Google contact lenses. According to the Reuters and the Wall Street journal, Novartis CEO Jiang Muzhong (Joseph Jimenez) says the contact lens will create "a lot of cash flow" and "the product will be commercialized in 5 years".

But the latest news is that the "blood sugar glasses" will be commercialized in two years.

In addition to testing blood sugar, Novartis called the contact lens and the role of an old mirror, which can be used as a part of the treatment of optical cataract. However, because contact lenses are close to the eyes, eye disease patients are not suitable for use, otherwise the stability and accuracy of blood glucose testing will be affected.
