On April 2, a reporter learned from an interview that the development of the LED industry in Jiangxi Province has begun to take shape, with main business income of 15.3 billion yuan last year. However, due to the lack of unified LED standards in the country, various regions are actively taking the lead in formulating local standards. The "fighting" of multiple standards and the lack of mandatory industry standards have also made the quality of some products not optimistic.
Experts suggest that the future development trend of LED standards will inevitably move closer to mandatory standards and increase market access thresholds. Only in this way can "bad money" be truly driven out of the terminal market and "good money" can bring benefits to end consumers.
Jiangxi manufacturers adopt Guangdong LED standards
On March 29, Jiangxi Ochis announced that it would cooperate with Shenzhen Changyuntong Optoelectronics to adopt the Guangdong LED (light-emitting diode) standard and release new technologies and products for "de-light-sourced LED standard optical components". It is understood that this is the first time that LED standards in Guangdong Province have been adopted by enterprises in Jiangxi Province.
Standards determine quality. Hong Zhen, secretary-general of the Guangdong Provincial Benchmark Quality Alliance, said: "Guangdong Province's LED output value is close to half of the country's. It is the first to launch standards. It has received responses from a number of companies and is expected to become an industry standard." Public information shows that Guangdong Province's LED standard optical component specifications have been applied by many companies. At present, the proposal jointly submitted by eight units including TCL Group, Foshan Lighting, and Changyuntong Optoelectronics has been approved. Several companies have established a "LED Lighting Standard Optical Component Testing Joint Laboratory" to test standard optical component products within the company and jointly proposed companies. "Joint Testing Laboratory" is used to test standard optical component products within enterprises and jointly proposed enterprises.
Some authorized companies have begun to vigorously promote their lighting products. For example, NVC Lighting's 200,000 LED standard optical component products have taken the lead in realizing label sales. These products have been rolled out in the markets of Guangdong, Guangxi, Shanghai, Zhejiang and other places, and have achieved good sales. In Guangzhou and Shenzhen alone, 30,000 sets were sold in a few days.
Due to the lack of unified standards, products are made according to customer requirements
Why do companies in Jiangxi adopt LED standards from other provinces? "Ochis itself is an enterprise from Guangdong, so there is nothing wrong with adopting Guangdong standards." Zhang Shaohua, secretary-general of the Jiangxi Provincial LED Standardization Technical Committee, said that the biggest problem in LED promotion is quality control. Since the country currently lacks unified standards, all regions are actively taking the lead in formulating local standards.
In fact, on May 6, 2010, the Jiangxi Provincial Quality Supervision Bureau reviewed the standards such as "LED Tube Lamps for Indoor Lighting" and "LED Bulb Lamps for Indoor Lighting" drafted by Jiangxi Lianchuang Optoelectronics and other units, and finally passed them and issued them as local standards. In 2012, Jiangxi established the LED Standardization Technical Committee. At present, Jiangxi Province has introduced a number of LED standards, but most of them are concentrated in the end market and are oriented to fields such as street lights and indoor lighting. Standards and specifications for upstream products such as chips are still blank. Standards and specifications for upstream products such as chips are still blank.
"We mainly produce LED chips. There are no standards now, so we can only do it according to customer requirements." said the relevant person in charge of a large LED company in the province.
Wang Qiong, assistant CEO of Jingneng Optoelectronics, said that LED is a high-tech industry, and product technology updates too quickly, which is also a major reason why relevant standards cannot keep up.
After years of cultivation, the development of the LED industry in Jiangxi Province has begun to take shape, and together with Fujian, it has become one of the four major LED industry gathering places in the country. It is understood that Jiangxi Province has cultivated more than 50 application product production and related supporting enterprises, and last year achieved main business income of 15.3 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 27.5%.
As one of China’s semiconductor lighting engineering industrialization bases, Nanchang occupies an important position in the semiconductor lighting industry. "Compared with Guangdong, which mainly focuses on downstream industries, Anhui and Fujian mainly produce upstream products. Although the total volume of the LED industry in Jiangxi Province is small, the industrial chain is relatively complete. This also has a more urgent need for the improvement of the industry standard system in a certain sense." Xingzhi, from the Electronic Information Division of the Provincial Industry and Information Technology Commission, said that the industry needs to establish standards as soon as possible. Requirements for product quality are the most basic respect for consumers. At the same time, as a manufacturer, you can also achieve standardized production, which is of great help in reducing product prices. Qiu is the most basic respect for consumers. At the same time, as a manufacturer, it can also achieve standardized production, which is of great benefit to reducing product prices.
Multiple standards “fighting” creates chaos
"An enterprise's sense of responsibility is the key to making good products, and it has little to do with standards." An LED manufacturer who did not want to be named told reporters that there are standards for traditional lighting, but there are many examples of shoddy products in the end market.
From the perspective of the LED lighting industry, product quality is not optimistic. According to the results of the 2013 national supervision and inspection of LED lighting product quality announced by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, the sampling pass rate of LED lighting products was less than 80%, and famous brands such as Philips and Delixi were even listed on the LED lighting quality black list.
The reporter learned that the current standards for LEDs are roughly divided into two types. One is the mandatory standard, and all relevant regulations involving the personal safety of users are included in the scope of compulsory certification; the other is the non-mandatory standard, which is often referred to as the CQC certification standard, and companies can selectively conduct certification.
The reporter visited a number of LED lighting manufacturers and learned that their attitudes towards industry standards and local standards have always been ambiguous. On the one hand, they shout that there are too many industry standards, leading to chaos in the LED industry; on the other hand, they do not want the introduction of national standards, especially manufacturers with low-end product positioning. Because the introduction of standards strictly defines whether a product is qualified or not, consumers will have a basis for judgment.
In Xingzhi’s view, the popularization of LED standards must start from two aspects. On the one hand, it is the user side. Only products that meet the standards can be purchased by consumers; on the other hand, it is enforced at the national level. Products that do not meet the standards will not be allowed to enter circulation channels. “The development trend of national standards in the future will inevitably move towards compulsory standards and rigidly raise market entry thresholds. Only in this way can ‘bad money’ be driven out of the terminal market and ‘good money’ bring benefits to end consumers.”
