Intel 65 nanometer technology breakthrough new P4 power consumption does not rise and fall

The production process Intel from 90 nm to 65 nm to upgrade their success will power single core Pentium four processor pressure down. Compared with the currently used Prescott core, the power consumption of the new Cedar Mill core has been reduced from 95 watts to about 86 watts.

Although most of the industry's current focus on the dual core processor, but the single core processor will accompany us for some time, such as Intel's single core 6xx series will continue to exist in the company's high-performance platform. Although the performance of the old P4 architecture has been very limited, but Intel is clearly a significant progress in reducing processor power consumption. According to foreign media access to a 65 nm P4 processor sample, the energy consumption of the previous generation of products decreased by 10%, but this processor has recently been removed from the official Roadmap Intel down.

Cedar Mill chip TDP (Thermal Power Design, thermal power design) is 86 watts, while the 2MB two level cache Prescott core is 95 watts, 86 watts of this package will be used in the P4 600- series processor, frequency from 3.0GHz to 3.6GHz.

Generally speaking, the miniaturization of the production process usually leads to the increase of the leakage current and the rise of the semiconductor energy consumption. However, Intel apparently has been achieved in the process of upgrading while still reducing the overall energy consumption. One of the methods they use is to keep the 1.2nm insulation layer of Prescott so as to control the leakage current. Intel's 65 nanometer production process is currently in use in D1D Fab in oregon.

Intel existing Pentium four Roadmap display with Cedar Mill core processor has five kinds, namely, 631, 641, 651, 661 and 671 (3 to 3.8 GHz). The sample obtained by the foreign media is 3.4GHz's P4 653, which supports Intel's latest virtual technology (VT). However, according to its Roadmap, this product should not be supported by VT technology.
