Last year, Chicago formulated a four year street lighting modernization plan. Over the past year, more than 76000 LED streetlights have been installed in Chicago, mainly in the southern and western parts of Chicago, where violence is likely.
By switching to energy-efficient LED street lamps, Chicago expects to reduce the street lamp tariff by half, officials expect to save about $100 million in 10 years. According to a press release issued by the mayor's office of Rahm Emanuel, the utility of the street lamp modernization plan is estimated to save up to US $1 million in the first year.
Chicago Transportation Bureau plans to replace 270000 streets, alleys and viaduct lights with high-quality LED lamps in four years. Chicago is also installing a citywide lighting management system for all new LED lights. According to the mayor's office, the lighting management system will be put into operation later this year, and the system will remind the city when the lights need to be repaired.
CDOT Commissioner Rebekah Scheinfeld said in a statement, "we are very satisfied with the progress made in the first year of the Chicago intelligent lighting scheme". "Our goal is to provide clearer and more reliable street lights for every Chicago community and save taxpayers a lot of money." (Editor: LED net James)
