California Micro Devices Corp announced the launch of CM4072, which is a linear regulator LED drives a single chip low noise / charge pump, provide power support for wireless handheld TFT white LED backlight LCD display equipment, PDA and LCD in the module. CM4072 is the latest product in the PhotonIC (TM) product family, which includes highly integrated, high efficiency, small size and low cost LED drive products. The CM4072 is packaged in a low profile, small 3 mm x 10- 3 mm lead TDFN package, making it an ideal choice for highly mobile electronic products. CM4072 is the ideal solution for the cost of wireless handheld platform, which requires a small package to meet the stringent cost goals while achieving high performance. The charge pump and the linear regulator integrated into one chip, CM4072 can improve the input voltage of the charge pump circuit, then the voltage supplied to the linear regulator provides a constant output voltage of 5 volts and a continuous output current 200 ma. In order to control the brightness of the white LED, the pulse width modulation signal is sent to the CM4072 boot pin by the baseband processor. The charge pump operates at a frequency of 250 thousand Hz, much lower than the clock, cellular, and PCS frequencies in a wireless handheld device. CM4072 has the following characteristics: 5 V output voltage stability, low noise, wide input voltage range: continuous output current of 3 volts to 5 volts up to 200 Ma efficiency of up to 83% 100 Hz to 30 thousand Hz frequency range of 42dB PSRR (PSRR) low operating current (180 a) saving battery the service life of the low shutdown mode to make double start fast start from the sleep mode, the charge pump and LDO (low dropout regulator) were used to control current protection and high temperature with low equivalent series resistance (ESR) ceramic or tantalum capacitor, the output voltage of 5 volts, so stability requires two external capacitors for small portable equipment 3 mm x 3 mm 10- lead TDFN package of CM4072 to support LED, the forward voltage range from 2.2 volts to 4 volts. Typical wireless handheld devices use approximately 3 to 4 white LED to provide backlight for the main TFT LCD monitor, each LED requires a maximum current of 25 ma. Because the CM4072 can provide up to 200 Ma, so it can easily support 5 WLED in each current 25 MA (white light emitting diode), for higher resolution and larger QVGA TFT LCD display backlighting. It can also be used in a high brightness camera flash LED video phone. CM4072 can be used for each maximum current of 65 Ma to drive the 3 white LED, and can be used to drive a current independent of 200 Ma high brightness camera flash LED. With the popularity of video phones, two CM4072 LED drivers can be used in the design, one of which is in the LCD module or near it, and the other is near the camera module. CM4072 currently available for sale, priced at $0.69 per 1000. Mass production scheduled for December 2005.
