Due to continuing to face the pressure from the LCD, market research firm DisplaySearch has revised its 2008-2015 OLED market forecast. But DisplaySearch pointed out that the new AM-OLED applications and some areas will accelerate growth in 2009 and beyond.
DisplaySearch said that in the third quarter of 2008, global OLED display sales were $141 million, down 11% from the second quarter, but an increase of 60% over the same period last year. Following the strong performance in the second quarter, PM-OLED shipments were hit by a decline in mobile phone screen orders, so it is said that shipments in the third quarter than in the second quarter decreased by 22%.
But DisplaySearch pointed out that the decline in shipments occurred mainly in monochrome PM-OLED above, and colorful and full-color PM-OLED is favored. This resulted in an average increase in the third quarter OLED sales price.
Jennifer Colegrove display DisplaySearch's technical director said: "the OLED display industry is rapidly changing, with new companies to join the existing manufacturers to expand production capacity or exit the market, other manufacturers are in the application of key change. "
She also said that although the use of the OLED display can achieve some very attractive properties, and in recent years the life has significantly improved, but this kind of display is still facing LCD and PM from TFT LCD strong price competition.
Allegedly RiTdisplay Samsung SDI has been listed as the largest shipments of OLED manufacturers, the market share is 36%, while Samsung is the 26%.
With AM-OLED shipments, Samsung SDI is still the highest overall OLED sales of manufacturers. In January next year, the company will merge with Samsung's small and medium sized display business, the formation of Samsung mobile display company (Samsung Mobile Display).
TDK exceeds Pioneer (Pioneer), becoming the third largest OLED supplier, with a market share of $17%, while a pioneer's share fell to $12%. Ranked fifth is Univision. According to DisplaySearch, the top five suppliers accounted for more than third of the total OLED shipments in the second quarter of more than 95%.
Crystal EL (Chi Mei) is the second largest supplier of AM-OLED display, the growth rate of the highest record in the third quarter shipments. The AM-OLED supplier Samsung SDI shipments lower than the second quarter. Overall AM-OLED shipments are said to grow.
