PHILPS mobile phone TV launch for the United States on SIP devices

In order to make us consumers to use mobile phone to watch live TV, PHILPS launched the mobile TV (TV-on-mobile) chip BGT211, which comprises a TV tuner with DVB-H standard (TV tuner) and a demodulator (demodulator), the United States specifically designed for spectrum. PHILPS hopes for this mobile TV device, it can play a key role in next year's planned DVB-H network for mobile phones. Crown Castle Mobile Media is building such networks in the United states.

The general manager PHILPS semiconductor mobile and personal business GertJan Kaat said, PHILPS began offering the system package to suppliers to the six major mobile phone since the summer (SIP) device samples.

TI and STMicroelectronics and several semiconductor manufacturers have released the launch mobile TV chip DVB-H based on the plan. But Kaat pointed out that the current market can be a commercial chip only PHILPS SIP solutions and solutions based on two single chip, the two single chip is Freescale Semiconductor and French TV tuner Carle DiBcom DVB-H demodulator. "Our solution is the only complete solution provided by a company," he said."

Kaat said that a single package provided by a vendor solution attractive for mobile phone manufacturers, because it can provide a better development environment for logistics and support, while providing the best solution for low power consumption. PHILPS said it has a TV tuner and demodulator SIP solution, DVB-H mode power consumption is less than 50mW, in the continuous mode (continuous mode) power consumption of 300mW.

The module package size it is 15 x 25 x 2 mm, next year will be reduced to 9 x 9 x 2 mm. Kaat said that PHILPS's mobile TV device prices above 10 to $12.

The only standard DVB-H is not the mobile phone TV broadcasting. Qualcomm Corp in the United States and the United States wireless network operators Verizon Wireless previously announced, Qualcomm Corp and its subsidiary MediaFLO USA Inc in collaboration with the Verizon Wireless in the United States through the MediaFLO multicast network to provide real-time mobile video for its users. Unlike DVB-H, it will be based on high throughput FLO technology and the use of MediaFLO media distribution system, in the 700 MHz band for mobile devices to provide multimedia content.

Relatively conservative American consumers for mobile TV attitude still can make nothing of it. "We put all our hopes on TV (mobile)," Kaat said." Mobile phone sales in 2008 is expected to be 1 billion 200 million, even if the 10-20% is a mobile TV mobile phone, it is also a huge market."
