Polar Light signs trial production line agreement to accelerate MicroLED commercialization process

On May 27, Swedish Micro LED company Polar Light announced that it had reached a cooperation agreement with the Finnish National Technology Research Center (VTT) for its first trial production line. Polar Light’s first Micro LED product has officially moved from the laboratory research and development stage to trial production scale manufacturing.

According to the agreement, Polar Light has started the process transfer from the laboratory to the VTT trial production line. VTT's trial production line will fully cover the complete manufacturing process required for Polar Light's first Micro LED product, thereby significantly accelerating product verification, large-scale production and final market preparation.

Polar Light’s chief operating officer said the company is committed to finding a partner that can take over all manufacturing aspects of the first commercial Micro LED product. VTT not only has certain technical strength, but its geographical location is also close to Polar Light's Swedish headquarters, which provides great convenience for cooperation. The transfer of the process flow is currently underway smoothly, and the two parties will work closely to ensure a smooth transition to trial production line manufacturing.

It is reported that VTT has profound knowledge accumulation in the fields of microelectronics, advanced semiconductor processing and trial-scale manufacturing. This cooperation will not only significantly reduce Polar Light's technical and mass production risks in the industrial transformation process, but also realize the performance advantages of its patented technology pyramid Micro LED architecture.

This trial production line cooperation is in line with Polar Light’s long-term strategy and will help it further expand its production scale, complete process certification, and successfully connect with the first batch of potential customers during the critical period for the commercialization of Micro LED products.

As a developer of next-generation Micro LED technology, Polar Light focuses on using atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology to grow pyramid-structured gallium nitride Micro LEDs on silicon carbide substrates. This technology can not only directly realize RGB full-color display on a single wafer and the same material system, but also provide excellent brightness and energy efficiency for new display applications.

In May last year, Polar Light released the first microdisplay prototype based on pyramid structure Micro LED (μLED) patented technology. In March this year, Polar Light announced that it was advancing the development of a dual-color Micro LED microdisplay prototype. The project is called "2nd Gen Micro LED" and the research and development cycle is 18 months.

With the signing of this trial production line cooperation agreement, Polar Light’s mass production plan is further advanced. According to Polar Light, it has previously revealed that the company plans to launch a monochrome green light display trial production line in the fourth quarter of 2026. According to the current plan, Polar Light has started the construction of the trial production line ahead of schedule.

The technical solution for realizing RGB on the same wafer is still in progress, with the goal of launching full-color products in 2028. (Compiled by LEDinside)
