Quantum dots self-illuminate, Samsung Display demonstrates 18.2-inch QD-LED display panel

According to news on May 15, Samsung Display demonstrated a display panel using next-generation self-luminous display technology QD-LED (quantum dot LED) at SID (Society for International Information Display) Display Week 2024.

OLED is currently the only self-luminous display technology that has been commercialized. However, due to the use of organic light-emitting materials, OLED has natural defects such as screen burn-in and aging, and its brightness is also limited;

The quantum dot display technology currently in mass production is based on the principle of photoluminescence, which requires excitation by a light source to improve color performance.

QD-LED combines the high efficiency of self-luminous technology with the high color accuracy and wide color gamut of quantum dots. It emits light directly through current drive. At the same time, because it uses inorganic quantum dots, the stability of the luminescent material is also higher than that of OLED.

The prototype panel displayed by Samsung Display is 18.2 inches in size, suitable for large notebook applications, with a resolution of 32001800 and a pixel density of 202PPI.

This QD-LED display panel uses inkjet printing, which can achieve large-area pixel patterning at the same time, greatly improving production efficiency.

Samsung Display’s QD-LED panel is based on an environmentally friendly cadmium-free process and does not use traditional cadmium compound quantumAccording to the materials, the related paper won the "Outstanding Paper Award of the Year" selected by SID.
