I believe that most people experience this when they fly: on a clear night, they look out of the windows of the airliner, and most of the cities below are bathed in bright orange light. This is mainly because the light is emitted by thousands of high-pressure sodium lamps. Ron Bednarick, a lighting expert, said: "from the sky, most cities are like orange spots."
However, with the revolution of road lighting, LED has gradually replaced high-pressure sodium lamps due to its longer service life and better light. All of this is beginning to change.
It is estimated that the total number of street lamps in the United States is 45 million to 55 million. Most of them are high-pressure sodium lamps, and a small part is metal halide bulbs.
Lighting expert Ron Bednarick said: "in the past two years, the speed of adoption of LED has increased by two times". "Because of the use of LED lamps, the quality of light has obviously improved, and the cost of saving has been quite significant."
He thinks, LED street lamp has three advantages: first, the light emitted by the carefully designed LED street lamp is clear, controllable and beautiful. The precise design of optical elements in LED lamps ensures that the light is exposed to its location, which means less waste of light. Second, LED lamps have lower maintenance cost and lower energy consumption. Since most road lights are owned and operated by utility companies, the use of LED can reduce energy consumption by about 40%. At the same time, more important savings are maintenance. Because the lumen output of HP lamps will be reduced, HBO lamps must be replaced at least once every five years. A single bulb replacement material and labor may cost between $80 and $200. Because the life of LED lamps is three to four times longer than that of HID, the cost of individual maintenance will be very large. Third, decorative LED street lighting is growing. With the improvement of technology and the reduction of manufacturing cost, lighting manufacturers can provide more extensive decorative lighting choices, which can imitate the lighting design of old gas lamps and so on, and have very aesthetic advantages.
A few years ago, LED lamps accounted for only a small part of the road lighting market. Compared with HID lights, the high cost of LED makes it difficult for most towns to switch. But today, with the progress of LED lighting technology and the decline of prices, the pace of LED adoption is accelerating. In the future, road lighting will be LED. (Editor: LED net James)
