Taiwan Industrial Research Institute develops 2-in-1 Micro LED display module rapid detection technology

In order to make 3C electronic products not subject to the limitations of strong light, and to be thinner and more realistic, display panel manufacturers are currently actively developing the next generation display technology Micro LED (micro-light emitting diode) that can meet this demand. Compared with traditional LED, Micro LED can achieve higher brightness, lower power consumption and wider color gamut to meet future smart display applications, such as the watches we wear, AR glasses, mobile phones and computers. Focusing on the two core points of color correction and optical detection, Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute has successfully developed a highly accurate two-in-one "Micro LED display module rapid detection technology" that can detect color and light source angle at the same time.

Lin Zengyao, CEO of the Taiwan ITRI Measurement Technology Development Center, said that Micro LED is too forward-looking and does not have certain specifications on the market. It must be customized and developed to meet the unique needs of brand manufacturers. Therefore, there is no precedent for testing or repair. The Taiwan ITRI R&D team first started with color uniformity testing, which is an urgent issue for the industry.

Because the size of Micro LED is very small, the camera pixels of the lens of traditional display measurement equipment cannot meet the detection needs. The R&D team of Taiwan Industrial Research Institute used "repeated exposure color correction technology" to achieve the color balance of the Micro LED panel through repeated exposure, and analyzed the color uniformity through optical correction technology to achieve accurate measurement purposes.

Traditional measurement requires rotating instruments to collect light sources at different angles for inspection. The light lens gathers light sources from different angles at one time and then uses original software analysis technology to display the light sources on the same interface at the same time to achieve fixed-point measurement. In addition to significantly reducing the detection time by 50%, it has also successfully broken through the traditional 100-degree light source angle detection and expanded it to approximately 120 degrees.

Micro LED, with its miniature, low power consumption and high brightness characteristics, can integrate sensors into the same module. For the interior of future cars, it can provide interactive smart cockpit features and drive a highly immersive smart experience.

With the support of the Technology Department, the Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan has successfully developed a highly accurate two-in-one "Micro LED display module rapid inspection technology". It uses a two-stop method to quickly analyze the color uniformity and angular optical rotation characteristics of micro light sources, providing customers with customized inspections of various new products. Compared with traditional equipment, the measurement efficiency is increased by 50%. It is hoped that through technological inspection improvements, it can help the industry break through mass production difficulties and enter the new world of next-generation displays.
