Ultra-high definition video standard guide is released, how does the LED display application industry respond?

Not long ago, in order to give full play to the leading and normative role of standards in the construction of the ultra-high-definition video industry ecosystem and accelerate the pace of building a manufacturing power, a network power, a digital China, and a cultural power, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the State Administration of Radio and Television jointly organized and issued the "Guidelines for the Construction of Ultra-HD Video Standard Systems (2020 Edition)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Guidelines"). This is the first construction guideline to be promoted from the standard field after my country launched the "Ultra-HD Video Industry Development Action Plan (2019-2022)" in 2019.

Industrial development, standards first

The level of standardization reflects the core competitiveness of a country's industry and the strength of its comprehensive strength. The "Guide" mentioned that by 2020, an ultra-high-definition video standard system will be initially formed, and more than 20 urgently needed standards will be formulated, focusing on the development of key technical standards and testing standards such as basic general, content production and broadcasting, terminal presentation, and industry applications. By 2022, the ultra-high-definition video standard system will be further improved and more than 50 standards will be formulated, focusing on promoting the standardization of industry applications in key areas such as radio and television, culture, education and entertainment, security monitoring, medical health, intelligent transportation, and industrial manufacturing.

Ultra-HD video is a new round of major technological innovation after video digitization and high-definition. It will drive profound changes in all aspects of the industry chain such as video collection, production, transmission, presentation, and application. The development of the ultra-high-definition video industry is also a major opportunity for the LED display application industry. There is no need to go into details. However, when it comes to the LED display industry specifically, how to guide the industry and standardize the development of the industry by establishing corresponding standards is a question worthy of our consideration.

For a long time, the development process of LED displays has always been dominated by customization. In the process of product application of LED displays, the introduction of relevant standards has lagged behind. However, in the past two years, the importance of standards has attracted more and more attention from industry insiders. Under the leadership of major industry associations, the industry has successively drafted a series of group standards for LED displays. For example, the "Light-emitting diode surface-mount products (SMD) series spectrum for indoor small-pitch/Mini full-color LED displays", "General technical requirements for asynchronous grayscale LED display controllers (cards)", "General technical specifications for indoor COB small-pitch LED displays", "Energy efficiency limits and energy efficiency levels of outdoor displays (1)", "Indoor SMD P2.5/P1.9 LED cloud screen" multiple group standards, some of which have entered the final review stage. The "Mini LED Commercial Display General Technical Specifications" group standard, led by the Shenzhen Lighting and Display Engineering Industry Association and jointly formulated by upstream, midstream and downstream enterprises as well as other industry enterprises, has been officially released and is closely related to ultra-high-definition display. .

Standards boost the development of the ultra-high-definition display industry

The "Ultra-HD Video Industry Development Action Plan (2019-2022)" clearly states that by 2022, the overall scale of my country's ultra-high-definition video industry will exceed 4 trillion yuan, the 4K industrial ecosystem will be basically perfect, and breakthroughs will be made in the research and development and industrialization of 8K key technology products, forming a group of internationally competitive enterprises. As one of the important display carriers of ultra-high definition video, LED display screen also shoulders a significant development history. Today, when China's LED display application industry has taken an important position in the world, how to keep pace with the times and keep up with the development trend of the times is also of great practical significance to Chinese LED display companies.

K is the abbreviation of a high-definition display resolution. The market generally uses 720P as the high-definition standard. The current technical resolution of high-definition TV is 1280×720, while 4K and 2K ultra-high definition have reached a physical resolution of 3840×2160, which is twice the width and height of ordinary FullHD (19201080) and four times the area. The total number of pixels of the display device has reached more than 8 million. Now it is generally used in home appliances, photographic equipment, and computer display screens. The screen resolution refers to the resolution of the screen display. Screen resolution A setting that determines how much information is displayed on a computer screen, measured in horizontal and vertical pixels. When the screen resolution is low, there are fewer pixels displayed on the screen, but the size is larger. When the screen resolution is high, more pixels are displayed on the screen, but the size is smaller.

The display resolution is the number of pixels displayed on the screen. The resolution of 160×128 means that the number of pixels in the horizontal direction is 160 and the number of pixels in the vertical direction is 128. When the screen size is the same, the higher the resolution, the finer and more delicate the display effect. For LED displays, the more pixels per unit area, the higher the density between pixels.

The emergence of small spacing has made a qualitative leap in the display quality of LED displays. LED displays have the conditions to achieve ultra-high-definition display. Nowadays, 2K display has been basically popular in the industry and is moving towards 4K display. However, the UHD Blu-ray standard requires a resolution of 4K, a color depth of 10bit, a color gamut of BT.2020, a contrast ratio that is the requirement for HDR, and a frame rate of 60fps. However, the 4K UHD display claimed by many companies in the industry is watery. It is actually made up of two 2K screens, and the frame rate is also reduced to 30 Hz. It cannot fully meet the requirements of 4K UHD display, so it is also considered "fake 4K".

In the absence of corresponding standards for ultra-high-definition displays in the industry, some companies use the banner of 4K/8K ultra-high definition to promote and publicize, which will inevitably mislead the market. Such opportunistic behavior will eventually be borne by the entire industry. To establish ultra-high-definition display standards, it is necessary to gather many majors and unite upstream, midstream and downstream enterprises to conduct extensive and in-depth discussions. Only in this way can we establish a standard system for LED displays that is in line with the current development of the LED display application industry.

In practical applications, there are currently no technical obstacles for LED displays to achieve 4K/8K display. However, our LED display screens from 2K to 4K, and even to 8K ultra-high-definition displays, are based on product standards for LED displays, but not enough attention is paid to the application end. Therefore, how to make a beneficial connection between standards and truly realize the industrial manufacturing end and the application end go hand in hand is also an issue we must pay attention to.

In short, LED display screen is an indispensable and important display carrier for ultra-high-definition display. Facing the coming ultra-high-definition display era, our display companies need to actively participate in the construction of relevant standard systems while making good products. Only in this way can LED display screens not be out of touch in the process of embracing ultra-high-definition development, and truly open up an ultra-high-definition display path for the industry and benefit the entire display industry.
