Inform all LED upstream and downstream manufacturers how to make money for Boston University students
Patent wars are not the exclusive business of commercial companies. Academics also come to participate. As far as the LED industry is concerned, Boston University in the United States holds key patents for upstream chips. As the university has a tight budget and is self-funded, Boston University has visited LED upstream and downstream manufacturers in recent years, including major terminal notebook and mobile phone manufacturers, which can be regarded as an alternative source of income. Boston University holds the patent for "high insulation single crystal gallium nitride film" (referred to as the 738 patent). In the past, it was exclusively licensed to the American LED manufacturer Cree (CREE). Cree has sued international manufacturers such as Nichia and Bridgelux for this.
Beginning in 2012, Boston University itself jumped in as a plaintiff, and lawsuits were filed everywhere, including Taiwan's Epistar, Everlight, Lite-On, and Acer, and South Korea's Seoul Semiconductor and Samsung, all of which were involved in the lawsuit. In 2013, another shot was taken at major notebook and mobile phone manufacturers. Apple and Amazon in the United States, Sony in Japan, LG in South Korea, and Asus, Acer, and BenQ in Taiwan were all sued by Boston University. Boston University’s patents are at the most upstream, but they sue the most downstream. The main reason is that major consumer electronics manufacturers have brand awareness and do not want to get involved in too many patent muddy waters. After being sued, they will put pressure on upstream suppliers, and Boston University will be able to defend its patents. The LED industry provides another interesting interpretation direction. In the past, Boston University handed over Cree to file a lawsuit. Although it defended Cree's business interests, it had no "substantial benefit" to Boston University itself. Now that the patent has been taken back and the lawsuit is filed, American universities generally have tight budgets and must be responsible for their own profits and losses. If they can win the lawsuit and obtain compensation, it will be a small boost to the school budget.
