True RGB, Sony’s further attempt in the RGB backlight track

Looking back in history, Sony released its first RGB LED TV (model Qualia 005) as early as 2004. Now that True RGB has been launched again after many years, it can be seen as another in-depth technological exploration of Sony in the direction of RGB backlight.

The core of Sony's True RGB solution is to use an independent red, green, and blue (RGB) LED backlight system to directly emit light through the three primary colors, replacing the traditional method of relying on a single light source and then converting. At the same time, this solution is equipped with research and development specially designed for True RGB true color backlight

According to reports, True RGB technology adopts the "True Color Core Chain" architecture to achieve full-link control from the system to the lamp beads. The RGB screen light chip is used for overall scheduling to achieve synergy between the screen and backlight; the RGB ultra-micro light core is responsible for fine-tuning the partitions; the RGB real-time light calibration sensor monitors the temperature and brightness of the lamp beads in real time; at the same time, the structure and optical design are optimized for viewing angle performance.

Based on the above technology, True RGB true color technology shows six core advantages, including true color wide color gamut, true color gray scale precise control, brilliant high brightness, true color active wide viewing angle, true color movie-like true color and true color backlight precise control.

The cooperation with TCL is a step for Sony to move away from heavy assets

If True RGB represents Sony’s investment in new technologies, then the cooperation with TCL Electronics is a choice in another direction. Since the beginning of this year, relevant news has been coming out in the market. Later, TCL Electronics officially announced the establishment of a joint venture. Sony will incorporate TV manufacturing and other aspects of its home entertainment business into the cooperation system. The new company is expected to start operations in 2027.

From a structural point of view, the focus of this adjustment is relatively clear:

For Sony, by holding 49% of the shares of the joint venture, it not only retains the right to define the "Bravia" brand and products, but also exits some manufacturing and asset-heavy operations, and participates in income distribution through shareholding. This solves the problems of limited profit margins and high operational complexity of TV manufacturing itself. By adjusting its structure, Sony can reduce the burden on factories and supply chains and focus resources on product definition, image quality adjustment and branding.

For TCL, the integration of its production system and supply chain will greatly assist TCL’s global expansion in the high-end market in the future. At the same time, this cooperation will help it further enter the core position of the supply chain of the global high-end TV system, while gaining spillover effects from the Sony brand system. This will provide certain support for the expansion of overseas high-end markets for both parties.

RGB-Mini LED TV capacity expansion to promote the popularization of Mini LED technology

From the perspective of the RGB-Mini LED TV market layout, since this year, many manufacturers, including Samsung, LG, Toshiba, Hisense, Changhong, Skyworth, Philips, TCL, Huike, Zhaochi, Zhuimi, etc., have intensively launched or released RGB-Mini LED related products. From the expansion of the size range to the differentiation of prices, they have further promoted the application of this technology.

Companies in the LED industry chain such as Qianzhao Optoelectronics, Sanan Optoelectronics, Jinko Electronics, Nationstar Optoelectronics, Hongli Zhihui, Ruifeng Optoelectronics, and Zhaochi are also actively promoting the development of RGB-Mini LED backlight technology. For example, the high-performance RGB-Mini LED backlight chip independently developed by Qianzhao Optoelectronics has been certified by terminal TV customers such as Hisense and has been mass-produced. At the same time, Jinko Electronics has also cooperated with head terminal brands to develop precise color control display module solutions with high brightness, high contrast and high color purity.

Many giants are focusing on RGB-Mini LED backlight technology, which will further promote the accelerated popularity of Mini LED TVs in the global market. According to TrendForce consulting data, brands such as Samsung, Sony, TCL and Hisense are actively developing RGB-Mini LED backlight TVs and continue to expand product lines of different sizes. TrendForce predicts that the annual growth rate of the global Mini LED backlight TV market application value will be close to 40% in 2026.

With the collaborative advancement of the upstream supply chain and terminal brands, Mini LED backlight is moving towards faster development. The focus of industry competition has also shifted from technical feasibility to high-end experience and market share allocation, and the differentiated paths of each brand have gradually emerged.

In this round of industrial upgrading, Sony not only needs to keep up with the iterative pace of core technologies such as RGB-Mini LED, but also needs to continue to maintain its voice in the high-end market against the backdrop of collective industry expansion and continued release of market dividends. How to continue to amplify its own advantages in the new wave of popularization may become an important issue for Sony in the next stage.

Summary

While Sony continues to technically promote image quality upgrades such as True RGB, it is also gradually reducing weight on the manufacturing side. For consumers, we can enjoy Sony’s top-notch picture quality adjustment and black technologies such as True RGB. At the same time, with the support of TCL’s strong large-scale manufacturing capabilities, the price of Sony TVs is also expected to become more affordable in the future.

From the perspective of the entire industry chain, with the further participation of leading brands such as Sony, the RGB-Mini LED camp is gradually releasing a stronger industry-driving effect. At the same time, it is also continuing to increase consumers’ awareness of display experiences such as high picture quality and high color performance, further driving the popularization and upgrading of the Mini LED TV market.
