At the 2023SID (Society for International Information Display) Display Week held not long ago, Tianma Microelectronics demonstrated the industry's first 9.38-inch Micro-LED display with adjustable transmittance - the transmittance can be adaptively adjusted according to the intensity of ambient light.

Behind "Dancing with Light" is Tianma's leading layout in the field of Micro-LED display. Tianma New Display Technology Research Institute, located in Xiamen Torch High-tech Zone, is Tianma's research and development platform for Micro-LED technology.

At present, Tianma New Display Technology Research Institute is intensively promoting the construction of a full-process Micro-LED experimental line, forming independent intellectual property rights and mastering mass production technology by opening up the core Micro-LED process.

Concentrate on tackling key problems. "Mass transfer" technology is a key part

As one of the most cutting-edge display technologies today, Micro-LED can be said to be the "hexagonal warrior" of the display family. It has the advantages of high brightness, high contrast, long life, low power consumption, etc., and can achieve seamless splicing effects.

However, the commercialization of Micro-LED still faces the problem of high cost. The reason is that there are many technical bottlenecks that need to be solved. Among them, "mass transfer" technology is a key part. The so-called "mass transfer" refers to "the process of accurately and efficiently moving millions or even tens of millions of micron-sized LED chips to the circuit substrate."

This technical problem is the focus of Tianma New Display Technology Research Institute. Qin Feng said that relying on Tianma's world-leading LTPS TFT backplane technology, the institute focuses on the development of mass transfer-related technologies based on TFT substrates such as mass detection, mass bonding, mass repair, and packaging module processes, focusing on improving the efficiency and success rate of transfer.

"Scientific research is a process of continuous trial and error. After repeated trials and demonstrations in the early stage, our process route is currently being continuously focused, laying the foundation for subsequent experimental line lighting." Qin Feng said.

The Micro-LED industry chain is long and the technical threshold is high. For Tianma New Display Technology Research Institute, the key point is to implement an experimental line covering the entire process, connecting upstream and downstream, and connecting the supply chain.

In Qin Feng's view, Xiamen's relatively complete industrial ecology provides a steady stream of momentum for the "stringing of beads into a chain" of experimental lines. "Xiamen's flat panel display industry has a good foundation and obvious advantages in aggregation. For example, in the field of LED chips, which is the core link of the industry chain, leading companies such as San'an, Qianzhao, and Silan Micro are gathered. This not only facilitates nearby supporting facilities and shortens the radius of the supply chain, but also helps improve the development efficiency of experimental lines."

Qin Feng introduced that Tianma had previously taken the lead in launching the Micro-LED Ecological Alliance, which brought together the power of upstream and downstream industry organizations to promote technological research and thereby promote the agglomeration, healthy and sustainable development and commercial application of the Micro-LED industry.

While cooperating with upstream and downstream companies to innovate, Qin Feng also leads his team to frequently participate in industry summits and conduct in-depth research on terminal application companies such as car manufacturers to capture new trends in the consumer market and carry out R&D and design based on customer needs.
