Sources say Apple plans to start developing its own iPhone and Apple Watch screens in 2024 to get rid of dependence on Samsung

According to news on January 11, Apple has been working hard to get rid of its dependence on other chip manufacturers. For example, the latest Mac computers have begun to fully use self-developed M series chips to replace Intel processors.

According to Bloomberg, starting in 2024, Apple plans to design customized displays for mobile devices such as iPhone and Apple Watch. Switching to its own displays will allow Apple to reduce its reliance on partners including Samsung and LG.

Reports indicate that Apple’s transformation will start with the high-end Apple Watch Ultra at the end of 2024, which will use Micro LED display technology. After introducing Micro LED displays in Apple Watch, Apple will expand them to iPhones and other devices. The displays will likely be manufactured by outside suppliers, but Apple will master its own design technology.

Bloomberg also said that Apple is making a "comprehensive effort" to make more of its own components for iPhone, iPad and Mac so that it does not need to cooperate with so many third-party component suppliers.

Home previously reported that Bloomberg quoted people familiar with the matter as saying on Monday that Apple plans to phase out Broadcom’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips in 2025 and switch to its own chip design. Apple is Broadcom's largest customer, accounting for about 20% of Broadcom's revenue. Broadcom shares closed down 2% following the news.

Apple is also looking to replace Qualcomm's 5G baseband chips. The report states that by the end of 2024 or early 2025, Apple will switch to self-developed baseband chips.

Sources say Apple is already testing Micro LED displays for Apple Watch, and the technology will bring brighter, more vivid colors and improved viewing angles. Bloomberg says the displays “make contentIt looks like it is painted on glass."

Sources revealed that the company initially planned to launch the product as early as 2020 Used year after yearMicro LED displays, but there are still technical challenges to overcome. Apple also planned to use Micro LED for larger display devices, but decided to focus on the Apple Watch first for cost reasons. Apple has spent billions of dollars developing display technology, and this shift is said to be one of its most "critical projects."
